Toxic work culture & how to overcome it

Figure 1: Toxic work environment

What Is a Toxic Work Culture?

When policies, practices, and management styles encourage negative employee behavior and conflict, the organization has a toxic work culture.

Unhealthy competition, poor communication, and negative attitudes are just a few signs of a toxic workplace. Unfortunately, toxic workplaces are widespread and can have a negative impact on staff members as well as the company's overall, (Safety4sea, 2023).

Figure 2: Signs of toxic workplace

1. High Turnover

It usually means that employees are unhappy, mistreated, or dissatisfied in their jobs, which makes them search for better opportunities elsewhere

2. Lack of trust

In the job, trust is essential. Without it, employees become disinterested in their work and become less devoted to the company. Oftentimes, they just do the bare minimum required and don't go above and beyond to be successful in their roles. Feeling separated from the company, they start exploring other options.

3. Lack of Respect

It is troubling when there is a lack of respect in the workplace. It occurs when colleagues fail to appreciate or be considerate of one another's feelings or thoughts.
Everyone's well-being is impacted by this, and it becomes more challenging for teams to collaborate effectively. The misunderstandings and conflicts it causes lead to agitated and demotivated workers. They might begin to doubt their own abilities and value.

4. Unethical Behaviors

When unethical behavior is allowed or even encouraged, toxic work cultures arise. This can include engaging in unethical behavior, lying, or cheating, which lowers employee morale and breeds mistrust. Unethical behavior at work can have a variety of negative impacts, such as damaged reputations, legal consequences, and a reduction in public confidence. Furthermore, it could discourage employees by conveying to them that their efforts and diligence are not valued.

5. Lack of Communication

Communication breakdowns, including inadequate routes and a lack of transparency, result in employee annoyance and uncertainty. This could lead to misunderstandings, a loss of trust, and a lack of cooperation. Lack of communication can have a negative impact on employee morale because it can lead to feelings of alienation and disconnection from the team. Employees may also find it challenging to get the information or resources they need to do their jobs well.

6. Lack of support and recognition

Workers who experience underestimation or lack of support may become separated and unmotivated, which worsens the already toxic work environment.

7. Gossiping, stereotyping and discrimination

In offices, it's usual to strike up a conversation during a tea break. You work in a toxic environment if you observe people making offensive jokes or stereotyping. Workers frequently form groups and use inside jokes to make new members feel left out. Even though it might not be planned, some people might feel uneasy and omitted as a result, (Safety4sea, 2023) (Hiration, 2022) (Bankole, 2023).

How to apply HR practices to fix the toxic work culture

1.     According to, Safety4sea, (2023) and Bankole, (2023),  encourage the development of a diversity
and inclusion policy that prohibits harassment and discrimination at work, and model this value for
        your colleagues.

 2.     Acknowledge the presence of a poisonous workplace by giving and getting feedback.

 3.     Setting boundaries and making an effort to relax can help you achieve a better work-life balance.

 4.     Encourage more employee recognition to help people feel valued and connected. Regularly thank
       coworkers for their contributions.

 5.     Establish clear expectations and a direct line of communication

 Conclusion

First of all, admit that there are instances when leaving is the wisest course of action. Leave if it's not working and no one wants to alter it. Tolerating entails acknowledging that you don't have to advance or find happiness at work, and this affects your personal life as well. And also,

Nobody should have to work in a toxic environment. All that toxicity takes a toll on your mental health, which in turn has an adverse effect on your motivation, sense of self-worth, and career path. Ultimately, you deserve better than to have to put up with a toxic workplace.
